Promoting Your Lodge
A practical reference for websites, social media, local groups, email, community calendars, public relations and the channels that help people discover what your Lodge is doing.
First Rule: You Do Not Need Every Platform
Choose the smallest set of channels that reaches the people you care about and that your volunteers can maintain. An abandoned account does not make the Lodge look modern. It makes the Lodge look abandoned.
Quick Platform Guide
| Platform | Best For | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos, events, text, community sharing | Large local audience; groups and events | Can be complex; organic reach varies | |
| Photos, Reels, Stories | Strong visual storytelling | Less suited to long text | |
| TikTok | Short-form video | Potential discovery and reach | Requires regular video skill/time |
| X / similar real-time networks | Short updates | Fast conversation and text | Short shelf life; can be noisy |
| YouTube | Long-form video | Searchable, evergreen education | Video takes effort to produce |
| Website / Blog | Permanent information and long-form text | You own it; useful for search | Requires updating; audience must find it |
| Direct communication | Not controlled by a social algorithm | Requires a permission-based list |

Use Local Distribution
The biggest mistake is speaking only to people who already follow the Lodge. Look outside the Masonic echo chamber.
- Local Facebook/community groups
- City and chamber calendars
- Libraries, historical societies and civic organizations
- Local newspapers, magazines and neighborhood publications
- Community newsletters and email lists
- Partner charities and organizations
- Members’ personal networks when the content is public and appropriate
Basic Public Relations
A press release is useful when there is actual news: a meaningful donation, milestone anniversary, public event, restoration project, scholarship, community partnership or other story a local publication could reasonably care about.
Make the important facts easy to find: who, what, when, where, why and how. Include a contact person, a useful photo when available and a short description of the Lodge.
Your Lodge Voice
Respond in a way that sounds like the Lodge: courteous, clear, calm and human. Thank people for compliments. Answer reasonable questions. Correct simple inaccuracies with facts. Do not get pulled into public arguments that have no productive outcome.
A Small Weekly System
- Check messages and comments.
- Post or schedule one useful update.
- Share or tag a partner when appropriate.
- Update any event information that changed.
- Save good photos and ideas for later.
- Do not force a post simply because the calendar says Tuesday.
